The idea of crossing the Alps has for sure gone through every head with love for the mountains. In fact, more and more people choose to cross the Alps by foot. However, before the adventure begins, the route has to be chosen, because there are countless routes across the Alps.
Here comes a suggestion: the so-called “Traumpfad” from Munich to Venice. The route has a length of 520km and leads through the most scenic regions of the Alps.
The route is divided into 28 daily stages. It takes about one month for the complete the track. The whole is designed as a hut to hut tour, so each stage ends at an accommodation.

Physical conditions

You do not have to be a “super-human” or a top athlete to hike the trail.
The day stages are technically simple but long mountain hikes. Walking times of seven hours are the norm. Each day, about 1000 meters of ascension and descent are on the agenda. There is also at least 10kg luggage. All this should not bring you to your physical stress limits since you will be not only one but about 28 days on the road. So you should bring good health and fitness.
On some stages, you also need to be sure of walking and dizzying. However, a climbing experience is nowhere else required. Only the Schiara via ferrata requires knowledge and a fixed rope set (with harness). However, the stage can be bypassed.

Accommodation

The majority of the day stages end at a mountain hut. As a rule, the accommodation is in a dormitory. The overnight stay in a hut is a lot cheaper for Alpine Club members like the German DAV, which is why we recommend joining such club before you start the tour, also for insurance reasons. As an Alpine Club member, you pay about 10 euros per night.
The other nights are spent on hotels or guesthouses. Here the prices are very different.
If you want to stay in a tent you have to stay close to a hut or guest houses and ask the owner for permission because camping is very restricted.

Best travel time

The hike is recommended between mid-July and mid-August.
It is not advisable to leave before July because high passes and crossings are probably covered with snow and ice. Nor is a departure to be recommended after the 17th of August since many lodges and lodgings close in mid-September. As early as the beginning of September, bus connections and cable car operations were also stopped in Italy.

Nature Conservancy

Nature should be respected, as is the case everywhere in the world. This means that no garbage is left, no flowers or plants picked, no excessive noise, no open fires, and no wild camping.
