The firs bend under the snow. The air is cold and clear. It is silent on the clearing. I put my head back and look up to the sky. Countless stars twinkle down. The snow reflects their light and turns the forest in milky white light.
The idea of crossing the Alps has for sure gone through every head with love for the mountains. In fact, more and more people choose to cross the Alps by foot. However, before the adventure begins, the route has to be chosen, because there are countless routes across the Alps.
Two men, four inline skates, six months and 7000 kilometres
This is the plan of Marian and Santiago from Halle (Saale). They want to travel through South America … on skates … in this way an unprecedented project.
The snow is crunching under the snowshoes. Nothing else: no noise penetrates the silent winter landscape. The snow sparkles in the sun and we are hiking in the middle of it. There is no one around but us from horizon to horizon.
Finally, it is time – we are on a hiking trip again. Let’s take our backpacks and make sure the GPS has the right information. ;)
My pulse is racing as I snap for air. Every inch of my body hurts. We are at 4,308 meters above the sea level. I´ve never been in such an altitude before! We stop hiking and taking a break. My pulse calms down and I´m able to take a deep breath.
I’m covered in snow up to my hips. Every step again I break into the meter-high snow cover. Why didn’t I bring the damn snowshoes?
